Audience Engagement
Listening happens before, during, and after the conversation.
I love to role model what I teach. Therefore, how do we listen to the audience before the recording? Previous hosts who have been open to experimenting with this invitation are pleasantly surprised with their audience’s questions about listening.
If you want to use your newsletter and social media channels, you can pose a version of these questions to your audience. If you think it’s an appropriate incentive – I would be happy to offer five complimentary paperback copies of how to listen – discover the hidden key to better communication – the most comprehensive book about listening in the workplace – sent to your postal address.
One of the best ways to role model listening is to ask the audience questions before the recording. Some hosts announce the interview on prior shows, ask via email or social media.
I’m speaking with a global expert on Workplace Listening – Oscar Trimboli
- what do you struggle with when it comes to listening?
- what would you like to ask?
- do you have a listening story or question you would like to share?
Past hosts have used one or a combination of these methods to collect questions;
- Add one or more of the question(s) to existing phone calls to clients or colleagues or co-workers
- Email the selected question(s) to their newsletter list
- Simple survey form using Google Forms, SurveyMonkey, Typeform, VideoAsk
- Create Poll questions via Social Media.
When the host reads back the selected question and the name of the person their question, the audience listens differently as it might be a pattern break in your format.
Please let me know if this is an experiment that you might be open to exploring.

Conversation
Oscar is comfortable creating a conversation by asking the host(s) questions. The intention is to help your audience notice when you are listening well.
He might comment on your questions through the Five Levels of Listening or Villains and invite your reflection. If your question is longer than eight words or a multi-part question, he will ask for clarification.
Pausing – Oscar will regularly pause between 1 to 3 seconds prior to answering. Some hosts may not be used to it, they may jump in and repeat or paraphrase the question, don’t worry just notice his body language, usually a nod to confirm the question has been understood.
